PALM SPRINGS, CA – On the second day of the Mary Nutter Classic, the Lions achieved a clean sweep by defeating Northwestern with a score of 2-0 and securing a narrow victory against Bethune-Cookman with a final score of 6-5.
Game 1:
Jenna Perez asserted her dominance on the pitching mound, limiting the opposing team to only one hit during the entire game. Her performance showcased her as a tough force to be reckoned with, leaving no room for the Wildcats to gain traction.
In the fourth inning,
Adele Braun's powerful swing sent the ball soaring over the left field, scoring a home run and putting the Lions on the scoreboard.
Following suit,
Kealani Caster replicated the feat, launching another home run in the same fashion as Braun, propelling the Lions to a 2-0 lead. LMU secured one more hit in the game, ultimately clinching the victory with a final score of 2-0.
Game 2:
Bethune-Cookman got on the board early, getting a run in the second inning. They kept the momentum going into the top of the third, singling through the right side and gaining two RBIs.
The Lions brought in
Jessica Hubbard to replace
Lindsay O'Dell in hopes of stopping the Wildcats, but Bethune Cookman scored three more times, leading the Lions, 5-0. At the bottom of the third inning,
Cristina Jones got a hit off singling to right field, followed by a walk from
Avery Francis. When
Izzy Jamgotchian got to bat, she doubled through the left side, bringing Francis and Jones back home and bringing the deficit to three runs.
Over the subsequent three innings, the Wildcats struggled to generate any runs, thanks to Hubbard's pitching and great Lions defense.
The Lions added to their score with a run in the fourth inning courtesy of
Lauryn Carter, one in the fifth contributed by
Jasmine Sofowora, and two more in the sixth inning from
Mika Chong and Jones, giving them the point win over the Wildcats, 6-5.
