LOS ANGELES – The Saint Mary's Gaels defeated the Lions Thursday night in Gersten Pavilion, 70-66.
Amaya Oliver delivered a standout performance with 18 points and seven rebounds, complemented by
Alexis Mark's 11 points and eight rebounds.
The Lions took an early lead with Oliver's jumper, and
Maya Hernandez's aggressive layup extended their advantage by five points. The first quarter ended with LMU holding a two-point lead.
The second quarter was neck and neck, with neither team gaining a lead larger than five points. Despite a 6-0 run by the Gaels, the deficit remained at just three points. With only 21 seconds remaining, the Lions reclaimed the lead with a three-pointer from
Nicole Rodriguez. However, the Gaels managed a buzzer-beater that allowed Saint Mary's to maintain a 31-30 lead going into halftime.
The score continued to remain close in the third quarter. Both teams went back and forth, tying three times, before the Gaels ended the quarter on a 5-0 run leading, 56-51.
The Lions were down seven with 4:37 left on the clock in the fourth until Oliver drove to the basket, starting a 7-0 run for LMU, tying the score at 66 with 58 seconds left in the game. The comeback was looking promising for the Lions, but the Gaels would score the last four points in the quarter and win the game.
Looking ahead, the Lions will face the Pacific Tigers on Saturday, Feb. 24, at 2 pm, in a game that also marks the Lions Black History Month celebration.
