LOS ANGELES – The LMU women's water polo team has won six in a row and now holds a 13-2 record on the season following a pair of wins on Sunday. The Lions started the day with a 16-3 win over the University of Toronto and followed that with a 17-10 win over Whittier College.
GAME 1: LMU 16, Toronto 3
The Lions controlled the game from the start, taking a 5-1 lead in the first quarter.
Skye Nankervis and
Noa Sasover started the game with goals. After Toronto scored their first of the day,
Ruth Arino Ruiz,
Yanah Gerber, and
Carolina Magano closed out the opening period with goals.
The lead grew to 7-1 as Nankervis and
Lior Ben David opened the second quarter with goals. The Varsity Blues scored consecutive goals in the middle of the period before Gerber and Nankervis built the lead up to 9-3 at the half.
The Lions controlled the second half entirely, as LMU did not allow a goal against them.
Carla Rivera,
Taylor Enright, Ben David, and Arino Ruiz all scored in the third quarter to increase the lead to double-digits after three.
Carolina Magano,
Julia Erwin, and Enright each added goals in the fourth quarter to bring the final to 16-3.
Madison Davis recorded two saves and two steals in the first quarter before
Talia Herbermann closed out the game with four saves, two assists, and the scoreless second half in her 24 minutes in the cage.
GAME 2: LMU 17, Whittier 10
The Poets scored the game's first goal before LMU responded with the next six to take the lead.
Julia Erwin started the scoring, and
Taylor Enright,
Carla Rivera,
Lily Larson twice, and
Sadie Riester all scored. Whittier beat the clock at the end of the quarter to make it a 6-2 score.
After
Julia Erwin opened the second quarter with a goal, Whittier answered with three of the next four to cut it to an 8-5 game. Only
Sophia DeMattia scored during that run and added a goal to stop the run with less than a minute remaining until halftime to bring the score to 9-5
The two sides traded off the scoring in the third quarter.
London Boyd started the second half with a goal, then Whittier scored, then Enright added one, before another from the Poets to stay within four, 11-7.
The Lions scored six straight goals to begin the fourth quarter and turn it into a double-digit game. Rivera, Erwin, Enright,
Kawehi Kauahi twice, and Enright again all scored in the first five minutes of the period. Whittier closed the game with three late goals.
Inbar Geva recorded two steals and a save in her eight minutes of action in the cage.
Tatum Roistacher made four saves over the last three quarters.
