Box Score 2 SAN DIEGO, Calif. – LMU opened the 33rd Annual Campbell/Cartier Classic with the win of the tournament, upsetting #17 Oregon with a 4-0 shutout victory. The Lions looked for a sweep on the day, but a back-and-forth second game ended with hosts San Diego State coming back to win, 6-4.
Game 1: LMU 4, #17 Oregon 0
Jenna Perez earned her first win of the season and proved to be the ace in the circle. Perez threw 125 pitches in the complete game shutout, fanning eight batters over seven innings.
After nobody had scored through the first two and a half innings,
Avery Francis and
Lauryn Carter reached base in the third to put a runner in scoring position for the second straight inning.
Izzy Jamgotchian came up to the plate with two on and two out and hit the first pitch she saw to center field to score both runners to give the Lions a pair of runs and a 2-0 lead.
The scoreline remained the same until
Jasmine Sofowora capitalized on another big, two-out hit to double LMU's lead. After Jamgotchian led off the sixth with a walk, Sofowora blasted a deep ball to left center for a two-run homer to extend the lead to 4-0.
Perez worked through the seventh and closed the game, stranding two more Oregon batters to bring the total to nine left of base in the shutout.
Each team finished with six hits and the game's only error put Francis on base in that two-run third inning.
Game 2: San Diego State 6, LMU 4
Lauryn Carter helped LMU jump out a first-inning lead after reaching base on a throwing error before stealing home on the Aztecs. San Diego State tied the game in the bottom of the inning as a leadoff walk came around to score without a hit allowed by pitcher
Jessica Hubbard in the inning.
A bunt single in the bottom of the third gave SDSU the go-ahead run with two outs in the inning.
The Lions took the lead in the top of the fourth on a two-run shot down the left field line from
Jasmine Sofowora.
Hayley Olivas opened the inning with a single and scored on Sofowora's home run.
Hubbard pitched into the sixth before the Aztecs scored four in the frame to flip the score line from down two to ahead by two.
The first two Lions reached base in the top of the seventh as
Kealani Caster singled and Carter followed with a walk to put two on with no outs. LMU was unable to bring the runs in, falling in the second game of the day.
