Lions Winning Streak Snapped by Shockers

LOS ANGELES – The Lions winning streak came to an end on Sunday afternoon with a 68-56 loss to the Wichita State Shockers.

"Credit to Wichita State today. Their physicality and pace took us out of our rhythm offensively, and they hit some big shots to keep us from gaining momentum," says head coach Aarika Hughes. "We didn't put together 40 minutes today, but we will learn from this game and continue to get better and grow as we head into the start of the conference on Thursday."

Maya Hernandez delivered another strong performance, recording her sixth double-digit game with 16 points and nine rebounds.

Carly Heidger added 10 points and an assist, while Brandi Williams reached a career milestone by grabbing over 400 rebounds.

The Shockers came out strong in the first quarter, fueled by an 8-0 run. Wichita State shot 52.6% from the field (10-19), while the Lions managed 37.5%. Late baskets from Hernandez and Naudia Evans helped narrow the gap, but LMU trailed 22-13 heading into the second quarter.

Shooting struggles plagued the Lions in the second, as they went just 3-15 from the field compared to Wichita State's 7-15. The Shockers capitalized on their efficiency to extend their lead to 40-23 by halftime.

LMU found some rhythm in the third quarter, shooting 8-18 from the field. Hernandez added six points, and Ava Toone contributed five, including a three-pointer in the final moments of the period. Despite the improved offense, the Lions entered the fourth quarter trailing 55-41.

Williams opened the final quarter with a three-pointer, energizing the Lions. A clutch three from Evans brought LMU within nine, but time ran out before the Lions could complete the comeback.

The Lions will kick off their conference season on Dec. 19, taking on the Portland Pilots at Gersten Pavilion
