SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The seconds were winding down and the LMU men's soccer team was looking to close out a hard fought draw against Santa Clara on the road. Then, in a flash,
Daniel Idiakhoa broke through the Broncos backline and delivered a cheeky flick over the goalkeeper to send the Lions home as 1-0 victors due to a 90th minute goal. Â
Â
With the majority of the match being played in the midfield, neither team generated many shots on goal. LMU finished with four to Santa Clara's two. Â
Â
Idiakhoa's moment came after a couple of resets as the referee asked goalkeeper
Ky Mani Dade kicked off twice from a goal kick. The third time was the charm as the kickoff met the heel of
Mydas Smalls. Smalls' flick went right to a Santa Clara defender who fluffed the clearance. Idiakhoa pounced and raced right by him, darting towards the left side of the goal. While holding off the defender, Idiakhoa scooped the ball over the sliding goalkeeper and wheeled away in celebration with only 32 seconds remaining in the match.Â
Â
With the victory, the Lions move to 3-3-1 in West Coast Conference play with one match remaining against No. 4 San Diego. The Lions could potentially play spoiler to the Toreros' quest for a conference title with a win on Nov. 16 at 7:00 p.m. (PT) on Sullivan Field. Â
