LOS ANGELES – The Lions got another stellar goal from the left boot of Kylie Dobbs and came from behind to draw 1-1 with Washington State at Sullivan Field on Saturday night.
Dobbs once again showed why she is the scoring leader for the Lions with a wicked effort from outside the box to equalize in the 35
th minute. Jennessa Groves battled and won possession in the attacking half before laying the ball off to Dobbs. Dobbs took two quick touches and rolled the ball onto her favorite left before drilling the far post with a dipping shot that easily beat the Cougar keeper.
Dobbs scored her seventh goal of the season with her first half equalizer. The last time an LMU player scored that many goals in a season was Jocelyn Blankenship in 2015. The school record is in sight as she is three away from the ten goals set by Cindy Carullo in 1993.
JJ Hoover was unfortunate to allow the opener in the first half of yet another very solid performance between the posts. The Cougar attack got to the endline and fired a shot at an awkward angle that she deflected with some good reflexes but could not clear the ball far enough as they scored on the rebound. She finished with six saves in the Lions first draw of the season.
Groves got the crowd out of their seats with an effort in the second half that nearly gave the Lions the lead. From 40 yards out, the forward stung a floating shot on target that forced the Cougar keeper to scramble and push the ball off target while sprinting backwards.
LMU thought they had the winner when Callan Harrington slotted home after a dangerous ball was sent into the box from a set piece opportunity, but the offside flag was raised. After a lengthy review, the call on the field stood as called.
LMU will be back in action on Wednesday, October 9 against the University of San Diego. The match will begin at 7:00 p.m. (PT) at Sullivan Field and will be streamed live on ESPN+. Tickets for the match are available at LMULions.com.
