MORAGA, Calif. - Daniel Idiakhoa notched his first collegiate goal in a 1-1 draw with Saint Mary's on Saturday afternoon in Moraga, Calif. Â
Â
The Lions were the first to score, but the Gaels equalized shortly thereafter to mark the final tally.Â
Â
The Lions got the breakthrough goal with some impressive tenacity in the box following a corner kick situation. After the ball was sent in, the Lions won a handful of headers to keep the Gaels on their back foot. Idiakhoa won a pair of those headers before
Ismail Nieves nodded the ball to Idiakhoa's feet. Idiakhoa took a swing at it and drilled a strong shot past a diving keeper and into the side netting at the far post. Â
Â
The Gaels did not go away as they equalized shortly after to send both teams to the locker room with a goal.Â
Â
Ky Mani Dade came up with a huge save in the second half to keep the match even.Â
Â
The Lions had a couple second half chances to take the lead, but were unable to put one past the Gaels' keeper. Â
Â
Alejandro Fuentesal-Atalaya had the most memorable opportunity, and it came off some sweet feet from
Kayvon Monfared. Monfared came on late in the first half and had a couple opportunities but remained a thorn in the Gaels' side in the second half as well. Monfared dipped beyond his man on the right wing and nearly made it to the end line before arcing in a cross to the back post. Fuentesal-Atalaya rose way up to meet it. The ball looped up off the crossbar and stayed in play. Â
Â
The match was very even across all facets of play as the teams played to the draw.Â
Â
The Lions will be back in action on Saturday, October 12 in the opener of the doubleheader with LMU women's soccer. The men's team will face off against Pacific at 4:00 p.m. (PT) before the women take the field at 7:00 p.m. against Santa Clara. Â
