LOS ANGELES—The Lions swept the Washington State Cougars 3-0 Thursday night, extending their winning streak to six.
LMU started strong, scoring the first four points of set one and capping the run with a big block by
Jiana Lawson. Midway through, the Lions jumped ahead with a kill from
Sophie Stephenson that started a three-point rally, putting them up 18-10. Though the Cougars responded with a four-point streak to close within five at 20-15, LMU powered through with five straight points to claim the set 25-15.
In set two, WSU jumped to an early 6-2 lead. A kill from
Paige Flickinger off
Delfina Schuh's set then sparked a five-point flurry, giving the Lions an 8-7 edge. The score remained close, with ties until LMU regained control at 15-12. Near the end, the Cougars rallied to lead 21-20, but LMU answered back with three consecutive points, including kills from Stephenson and Flickinger, sealing the set with a service ace by
Sophia Meyers at 25-22
Set three was another nail-biter, with both teams neck and neck until the Lions broke away with a four-point streak, leading 14-11. Steady play on both sides kept the score close until a kill by
Marlee Arrington sparked another four point burst, ending with Arrington's kill for a 21-15 lead. LMU closed with four straight points, sealing the win with a block assist from
Leah Burrell and Lawson, taking the final set 25-17 and the match 3-0.
Arrington led with 10 kills, while Lawson dominated defensively with five blocks and a .429 hitting percentage.
Sam Hastings also led both teams in digs, recording 16.
The Lions return to action on Saturday, Nov. 2, when they face the San Diego Toreros at 12 p.m. in San Diego, CA.
