Zags Capitalize on LMU Turnovers, Tough Shooting Night

SPOKANE, Wash. – LMU men's basketball was unable to repeat last season's memorable trip to The Kennel, falling on Saturday night, 92-58, to Gonzaga.

Alex Merkviladze hit a three to put LMU ahead 3-2 early in the game for LMU's only lead. Merkviladze ended a Gonzaga run with a driving dunk less than three minutes into the game to make it 9-5. Another Merkviladze three brought the Lions within two, 12-10, with 14:16 on the clock.

The Zags responded with a 13-2 run to take their lead to double digits. Justice Hill scored his first field goal of the game to end the run. Merkviladze and Hill combined for the first 14 points for LMU, and 23 in the first half.

Justin Wright hit a pair of jumpers over the final five minutes of the opening half, but 13 first-half turnovers put the Lions in a 45-29 hole at intermission.

Gonzaga started the second half on a 23-2 run over the first seven minutes to extend their lead to 37 points.

Dominick Harris ended the run and scored all nine points for the Lions during a five-minute stretch in the middle of the period. Harris finished with 11 points against his former team.

Late in the game, Keli Leaupepe went on a personal 8-0 run, with two made threes. Leaupepe finished with 10 points.

Wright finished with four of LMU's final five field goals to make it a dozen points on the night. The guard led the Lions with seven rebounds and three assists.

In total five Lions scored in double-figures, with Hill scoring 14 and Merkviladze finishing with his 11 from the first half.

The Zags capitalized on 20 LMU turnovers and only committed five of their own.
