FULLERTON, Calif. – LMU women's water polo extends their win streak to four after defeating both Cal State Fullerton and Cal Lutheran on Saturday at the Fullerton Mini Tournament. The Lions never trailed on the day, earning an 11-6 win over the Titans and following with a 21-4 victory over the Regals.
Game 1: #19 LMU 11, Cal State Fullerton 6
Anna Tarantino scored the game's opening goal, followed by goals from
Ruth Arino Ruiz and
Noa Sasover to push the lead to 3-0. The Lions led by one, 4-3, at the half before scoring four consecutive goals to open the third quarter.
Lior Ben David scored twice in that stretch coming out of the break.
Mikayla Lopez scored LMU's fifth goal of the third quarter. Arino Ruiz ended the game with her final two goals to lead the Lions in the first game with five goals, two assists, and seven points.
Madison Davis made six saves in the cage to earn the win.
Talia Herbermann closed out the fourth quarter, allowed only one goal, and made four saves over the final eight minutes of action.
Game 2: #19 LMU 21, Cal Lutheran 4
The Lions jumped ahead with seven unanswered first-quarter goals scored by seven different players.
Yanah Gerber, Sophia Kadifa,
Skye Nankervis,
Noa Sasover,
Kawehi Kauahi,
Isabella Obando, and
Julia Erwin each beat the goalkeeper in the opening eight minutes.
LMU added to the lead with four goals in the second quarter, as
Tessa Matson, Erwin,
Taylor Enright, and Katherine Wastilla all scored. The first three came on even-strength goals before Wastilla converted a penalty shot with 1:32 remaining in the opening half.
Mikayla Lopez opened the third quarter with back-to-back goals. Enright and Matson each added their second goals of the day in the period and Erwin added a third to her total.
Julia Erwin opened the fourth quarter with her fourth goal of the day.
Carla Rivera added three in the period and
Sadie Riester scored her first collegiate goal in the win.
Inbar Geva and
Tatum Roistacher each played a half in the cage for the Lions. Both players allowed just two goals, with Geva recording two saves and a steal and Roistacher making her first four collegiate saves.
