LOS ANGELES – LMU defeated Pepperdine in the second round of the PCH Cup Rivalry, completing a season sweep against the Waves.
"Pepperdine is a great team," said Coach
Aarika Hughes. "I'm proud of my team for finding a way to gut it out down the stretch."
Four Lions achieved double-digit scores, with
Soufia Inoussa contributing 14 points and securing four rebounds.
"Soufia is a competitor. We ask her to do a tone on defense, so I believe when she sees space, and we get defensive stops, and she has open real estate, she can be really aggressive. That's what she was", says Hughes.
Nicole Rodriguez also delivered an impressive performance, accumulating a total of 14 points.
Seeing Nicole go down with an ankle injury and working her way back is what Nic does," said Coach. "She's going to continue to see time out on the floor the healthier she gets, but I'm really proud of the fact that she was aggressive today."
Amaya Oliver also chipped in with 12 points, followed by
Alexis Mark with 11.
The Lions had a strong start to the game, securing the first five points. Inoussa made a crucial basket and drew a foul with less than six minutes remaining, giving LMU a 12-4 lead. The quarter concluded with
Noelle Yancy sinking two free throws as time expired. The Lions managed to limit the Waves to only 11 points in the quarter, establishing a 19-11 lead. LMU dominated in the paint with 10 points, surpassing Pepperdine's six.
The Waves opened up the second quarter, but LMU quickly answered with a three-pointer from
Nicole Rodriguez. Another successful three-pointer from Rodriguez extended the Lions' lead to double digits, reaching 25-15 over the Waves. LMU then embarked on a 7-0 run, securing their largest lead of the half at 38-21. Yancy's two made free throws further widened the gap, allowing LMU to head into halftime with a commanding 17-point lead over the Waves, 40-23.
The Lions displayed amazing aggression in the middle of the third, scoring 11 consecutive points. The Lions were 50% from the field, shooting 8-16. They were also a perfect 100% from the line. The Lions again dominated in the paint, scoring 12 points. LMU would continue to keep their lead going into the fourth, 64-41.
Early in the fourth quarter, the Waves went on an 11-0 run, showing that they were not going to back down. Pepperdine was able to get the deficit down to 12 with 2:22 left to go. Many fouls were drawn for LMU, resulting in four made free throws to end the quarter and win the game, 75-59.
The Lions next game is Thursday, Feb. 1, against the Santa Clara Broncos at 7 PM in Gersten Pavilion.
