LOS ANGELES – In a battle between two teams now in the same conference, No. T-8 Pepperdine got the better of the No. 14 LMU Lions on Saturday in the first matchup of the season between the two programs. The Lions fell, 17-6 to the Waves.
Pepperdine jumped ahead 4-0 before
Alex Marlow put the Lions on the board with 2:22 to play in the opening period. The Waves led 5-1 after eight minutes.
The two teams traded off the first four goals of the second quarter following an LMU goalkeeper change to
Finn Friedland to start the period. Both Abel Romero Cobalan and
Augie Renezeder scored goals less than two minutes into the period, as each team scored on both of their opening possessions. Pepperdine closed out the half with three unanswered goals to take a 10-3 lead into the break.
Romero Corbalan scored a pair of goals in the third quarter, and
Tommaso Baldineti added one of his own, as each played even scoring three goals apiece in the third.
LMU did not beat the goalkeeper in the fourth quarter as the game went final.
Friedland made eight saves over the final 24 minutes after jumping into the cage for starter
Stelios Dalmaras.
The Lions return to the pool Sunday morning for another nationally-ranked contest. LMU hosts No. T-6 Stanford at 11:00 on the Bluff.
