LOS ANGELES – The Lions claimed victory in their home opener on Thursday night, defeating the Marists Red Foxes, 3-0.
 
Set one started with a service ace from Isabella Bareford, and the rest was history. A Red Foxes kill tied the score, but only for that one time. The Lions would have multiple streaks featuring kills from Amethyst Harper, Jacquelyn Moore, Kari Geissberger, and Michelle Shaffer. The Red Foxes struggled to gather points and ended the set with a mere eight on the board. LMU closed out set one strongly, scoring the last three points and taking it 25-8.
 
The Lions carried that momentum from the first set into the second. A service error by Marist marked the beginning of a 3-0 run for LMU. While both teams managed to add a few points here and there, the Lions soon took control, going on a six-point streak and leading, 12-4. Midway through the set, LMU went on another impressive five-point unanswered streak, widening their lead to 14 at, 20-6. Olivia Toland contributed with her first kill of the season, extending the lead, 23-8. Although Marist scored once more, the Lions' advantage was undefeatable. The set concluded with a block by Shaffer, ending it at, 25-9, in favor of LMU.
 
Set three began with Marist scoring first, but LMU quickly responded with a kill by Harper, sparking a commanding 7-0 run. The Lions continued to dominate, establishing a 10-point lead at 12-2. Although the Red Foxes managed a rare 3-0 run, they still trailed the Lions. LMU maintained control throughout the remainder of the set. Freshman outside hitter Kayla Lopez sealed the deal with her first collegiate kill. The Lions secured set three with a score of, 25-12, completing the 3-0 sweep.
 
Geissberger led the match with eight kills, followed closely by Shaffer and Moore, each with seven. Sam Hastings led with 15 digs as well.
 
The Lions next game is this Saturday, Sep. 9, against American at 1 PM in Gersten Pavilion.
