Lions Unleash Shot Parade in Second Half Despite Defeat

LOS ANGELES – The Lions came alive in the second half and fired off 10 shots in the second half and 17 overall but were unable to find the back of the net in a 2-0 loss to Cal Poly on Sunday afternoon.

The Lions saw a Herculean goalkeeper outing by Mustangs goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel, who made five saves. Two of those saves came right on the doorstep, once from Kylie Dobbs and once from Alex Hobbs

The Broncos took the lead in the 8th minute and then frustrated the Lions over the remainder of the first half with seemingly nothing working. In the 42nd minute, it looked like Dobbs may have had the opener on a nice run down the left side of the field. She composed herself and fired a low right-footed shot that Samuel made an excellent stop on.

In the second half, the Lions really ratcheted up the pressure.

Dobbs unleashed another shot on target in the 53rd minute and finished the match with four total shots.

In the 61st minute, it was Hobbs with the scoring opportunity. After picking her way through the traffic, she fired a shot towards the bottom right corner that Samuel palmed away. A follow-up shot was kicked away by a Broncos defender to get them out of trouble.

Jennessa Groves notched a shot on target in the 63rd minute to get in on the action.

Genevieve Watkins glanced a header over the bar in the 74th minute after the Lions earned a free kick.

Megan Rucker continued to be dangerous out of her left back position by bruising the post in the 83rd minute. After some creativity to create some space, she drove what was supposed to be a cross towards the box, but the ball banged off the near post dangerously. She has hit the frame of the goal three times in the previous two matches.

The Mustangs doubled their lead in the 78th minute for the final tally.

True freshman JJ Hoover recorded a pair of saves in her third match. She has notched seven saves in three games.

The Lions will be back in action at Sullivan Field on Thursday, August 31st against Cal State Bakersfield in a third straight matchup with Big West competition. The match is slated to kick off at 7:05 p.m. (PT) and will be streamed on ESPN+.
