Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Kings, Lions Upend No. 15 Cavaliers

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virg. - Ryan Kingsford opens his scoring account at LMU in the 2nd minute, Lewis Clutton scored his first career goal as a Lion and the LMU men's soccer defeated No. 15 Virginia on their home field 3-1 on Sunday night.

The Lions wasted no time getting on the scoresheet in this one. Jovan Prado delivered a cross to Kingsford with just 62 seconds gone in the match that was volleyed home by the Englishman to stun the Virginia crowd.

In the 15th minute, Clutton fired home from 12 yards after some chaos in the box. Prado floated another cross into the danger area that was punched away by the Virginia keeper. Clutton was the first to the rebound and he put his laces through the ball with a low, curled shot into the bottom left corner of the goal.

The Cavaliers would grab a lifeline in the 28th minute with a penalty kick goal.

The Cavaliers tested Massimo Oedekoven Pomponi a handful of times, but he stood his ground and collected three saves.

The second half saw the Lions turn up the pressure even higher.

Prado had the first good chance of the second half in the 50th minute. He combined some stepovers with a cut to the inside and fired a curling shot that looked destined for the side netting before a Cavaliers defender made an acrobatic save to kick the ball just over the crossbar.

On the ensuing corner, it was Bradyn Knutson who headed a Steven Anderson cross just wide.

Kingsford put the game away after some nice team play in the 85th minute.

Okeefe Cunningham baited the Virginia goalkeeper into playing a bad pass. Cunningham fed the ball to Prado, who played it back to Cunningham, who poked it to Gael Quintero, who flicked it to Christian Ortiz, who went through the legs of the Cavalier defender and onto the waiting boot of Kingsford for a brilliant team goal.

Prado had an opportunity to get a fourth goal for the Lions after winning a penalty shot, but the Cavaliers keeper made the save to keep the deficit at two. He finished his night with a pair of assists.

Pomponi recorded his first career victory. With a one-goal lead, Pomponi was faced with a one-on-one situation where a shot was fired through his legs, but he stopped it with a hand behind him to keep it out of the net.

LMU remains on the road at California Baptist on Saturday, September 2nd. The match will begin at 8:00 p.m. (PT) and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
