LMU Celebrates College Colors Day

Support the Lions and show team spirit by wearing your LMU colors to the next game or watching at home

Across the United States, students, parents, family, faculty, staff, fans, and alumni celebrate College Colors Day every year on the Friday before Labor Day. This year, it takes place on Friday, September 1. This is the big day of the year you can show spirit and school pride by rocking the LMU crimson and LMU blue and wearing LMU apparel.

"When you go to a college game or event and begin to watch exciting fans as well as student-athletes seeking a win, it's hard to be nonchalant because it all looks so cool," said Jacob Dye, Associate Athletic Director for Marketing and Fan Engagement/Branding and Licensing at LMU.

The 19th College Colors Day, a national holiday developed by licensing leader CLC to celebrate collegiate fandom, returns on Friday, September 1, uniting fans across the country by encouraging them to represent their favorite schools by wearing their apparel on a single day.

Support the Lions and show your team spirit by wearing LMU colors to the next game or while watching on TV. Rally the fans and show the Lions that you know they will go for the win.

"Many alumni enjoy sharing memories of games from years past, especially the close ones, win or lose," stated Dye. "We look forward to igniting Lion Pride and continuing a long-standing tradition of Lion Pride Friday. Now get out and wear your LMU colors – LMU Crimson or LMU Blue – and showcase your Lion Pride."

Team spirit has long been a foundation of cheering student-athletes to victory. Wearing LMU colors and apparel goes along with the energy of the day. Not only does it bring back memories, but it carries on traditions. Sometimes, these traditions run deep, too.

History of College Colors Day:
School colors are more than just accessories when it comes to universities. They are an extension of a school's identity and, for many people, their identity or symbol of pride. Many schools choose their colors with a significant amount of care. Whether you were in the creative arts, sports, or financing, you likely have a special connection to your school's colors.

Founded by the College Licensing Company in 2004, College Colors Day, fans get to rep the apparel of their favorite college or university throughout the day. Who is the CLC, you might ask? They are the licensing division for over 200 colleges in the United States. The CLC is mainly responsible for providing the college-branded merchandise we value today. You can thank them for your koozies, jerseys, and branded hats because they likely licensed them.

Over the last few years, the CLC has seen a considerable increase in sales, more than expected from the influx of students getting degrees. Recently, we've even seen celebrities sporting the attire of a university they most certainly never attended. This shows that there is a nostalgic factor associated with fashion that goes even beyond personal attachments. College apparel has gone from an elitist group of exclusively students and alumni to a badge of honor to a place you are loyal to. This is essentially the point of the holiday: finding pride in your "home" and a community in loyalty.
