No. 16 Hoyas Sneak Past Lions in Downpour

LOS ANGELES – According to the National Weather Service, a tropical storm has not made landfall in California since September 25, 1939. Tropical Storm Hilary was dropping wind and rain on Sullivan Field on Sunday morning, but that did not stop the Lions from fighting a tightly contested battle with the No. 16 Georgetown Hoyas. Georgetown ended up victorious 1-0.

With the MLB moving games from Sunday to Saturday and UCLA women's soccer canceling their match against Portland on Sunday, the Lions and Hoyas were given the go-ahead and powered through the weather to get the match in.

The first half was markedly calmer than the second, with Georgetown enjoying the majority of possession while the Lions looked to play on the counterattack. Pepperdine graduate transfer Ellie Sommer was in net for the Lions in game two of the season.

The Hoyas had the first opportunity of the match in the 11th minute. Off of a corner, Georgetown floated a ball back post that was hit with a glancing header and rebounded off the side of the post and out of bounds for a goal kick.

Jai Smith and Helen Schaefer came in as substitutes in the 26th and 28th minutes respectively and provided a shot in the arm for the Lions. Smith was all over the field and was the outlet for the Lions to relieve pressure. Schaefer came in as a wing back and was a steady presence on the ball.

The first half demonstrated the Lions way, blocking shot after shot and playing spectacular defense.

In the second half, the Hoyas took the lead in the 49th minute.

The Lions would not go away however.

Smith let loose a shot from outside the box in the 53rd minute that forced a save from the Hoyas goalkeeper.

Olivia Winter blasted a shot wide right in the 73rd minute, displaying her devastating right foot in the process.

Amber McCorkle also registered a shot in the 85th minute for the Lions.

Sommer notched a pair of saves between the posts, with the Lions defense only allowing three shots on target.

LMU is back in action on Thursday, August 24 against CSUN at 7:00 p.m. (PT). Tickets for the match will be available on LMULions.com or at the box office before the match. The match will also be live streamed on ESPN+.
