Lions Complete Sweep of Midweeks Against Dirtbags

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Khadim Diaw recorded four hits, Jared Thomas recorded four RBIs, Chaz McRoberts earned his first collegiate victory and the LMU baseball team defeated Long Beach State 9-3 on Monday night in Long Beach, Calif.

The Lions got off to a hot start with Diaw reaching on a leadoff single in the top of the first. Sam Biller bunted a batter later, reaching first when the defense could not make a play. Both came around to score when Thomas dropped a double into left field.

The Lions kept up the pressure in the second inning. Benny Casillas stayed hot with a two-out single through the right side. He stole second and then raced around to score on Diaw's second hit of the afternoon.

Diaw was integral in the fourth run scoring as well. Devan Ornelas led off the top of the fourth with an opposite field single. He would advance to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cole Roberts and then to third with a Casillas groundout. Diaw notched a two-out RBI single to center field to extend the lead.

Roberts led off the sixth with an infield single, and the Lions would use that as a catalyst to put the game out of reach. Casillas and Biller walked to load the bases before all runners moved up a base on a balk. Thomas followed up with a single to score Casillas from third and advance Biller. Third baseman Diego Baqueiro plated another run with an RBI single and Dylan Dennis notched an RBI single as well to close the scoring in the sixth. The Lions finished the inning with an eight-run lead.

The Dirtbags would get a run back in the bottom of the seventh, but the Lions would cap off the performance with a Thomas sacrifice fly.

McRoberts performed admirably in his third start of the season. He threw 3.1 innings, allowing only a pair of singles and striking out three. The true freshman has really grown as the season has progressed, with his ERA dropping to a modest 4.70 after the game. Head coach Nathan Choate also took the opportunity to use the live game reps to get Owen Hackman and Zach Kirby in before the series against Pepperdine this coming weekend.

The Lions will be back in action against UCSB on Tuesday, May 9 with first pitch scheduled for 5:05 p.m. (PT).
