MALIBU, Calif. - Zach Kirby threw an absolute gem,
Dylan Dennis and
Khadim Diaw both left the yard and the LMU baseball team defeated Pepperdine 10-0 on Saturday afternoon in Malibu, Calif. Â
Â
The Waves retired the first eight batters of the game in order, but after Benny Casillas singled up the middle with two outs in the third, the flood gates opened. Khadim Diaw followed the single with his eighth homerun of the season, a no-doubt blast to left field into the ocean breeze. Â
Â
Â
The Lions refused to let up with the pressure and put up another run in the fifth. Sam Biller led the inning off with a single to center. Baqueiro singled to advance Biller to third before he was brought in with an RBI groundout from
Connor Blough. Â
Â
It was more of the same in the sixth, with the Lions adding two more. Ornelas led off with a single to left center and advanced to second on a ball in the dirt. He scored easily when Roberts chopped a double inside the third base bag. Roberts would also score when Biller laced a two-out single into center for his second hit of the afternoon. Â
Â
Dennis launched his second homer of the year in the seventh inning to extend the lead once again. Blough worked a one-out walk before Dennis blasted an 0-2 pitch off the top of the wall in left field and over. Â
Â
In the eighth, Casillas worked a leadoff walk and advanced to second when Diaw grounded out to third. Jared Thomas would notch his first hit of the game with a single through the middle and Casillas would score easily to mark the final tally. Â
Â
LMU got another fine pitching performance from senior
Zach Kirby. The East Tennessee transfer went eight innings, allowed no runs and punched out six while allowing three hits and one walk. Â
Â
Chaz McRoberts came on for the ninth and allowed a walk before inducing a double play to end the game. Â
Â
The Lions are inching closer to an outright regular season conference title. With four more conference games to play, the Lions' destiny remains in their own hands. Two more wins guarantee at least a share of the conference title, whereas three would guarantee the conference regular season championship outright. Â
Â
The Lions return to Malibu to face the Waves for the final game of the set on Sunday, May 13 at 1:00 p.m. (PT).Â
