Lions Earn Win in Final Game at GCC Championship

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – LMU women's water polo responded on Sunday morning in the Golden Coast Conference Tournament's Third-Place Game. The No. 17 Lions tied a season-low by allowing just six goals to 24th-ranked San Diego State in the Aztec Aquaplex, 14-6

The offenses in the first quarter went back-and-four with neither team holding more than a one-goal lead after any of the game's first nine combined goals. After falling behind, Mollie Williams and Marialena Seletopoulou each scored to give the Lions their first lead. SDSU scored to stop the run, but Seletopoulou converted a penalty shot at the midway point to push LMU back up by one. The Aztecs retook the lead with just over two minutes to play in the opening period. Seletopoulou then scored her third and fourth goals of the first to lead 5-4 after eight minutes.

From that point, LMU's defense buckled down and only allowed two more goals for the remaining 24 minuets of the game. Mollie Williams opened the second quarter with a pair of goals. Isabella Barajas and Alexandra Akritidou followed with a goal apiece until SDSU finally scored with 1:06 remaining before halftime.

The third quarter was all LMU as the Lions scored three goals and did not allow one to go past goalkeeper Madison Davis. Yanah Gerber and Williams scored back-to-back goals midway through the period, and Ruth Arino Ruiz added one more with 1:04 on the clock.

It took less than 20 seconds into the fourth quarter for Seletopoulou to score her fifth goal of the game. Kelsey Snelgar increased the lead to 14-5, before the Aztecs scored the game's final goal.

The LMU goalie Davis made 12 saves, recorded two steals, and added two assists in Sunday's win.
