SANTA CLARA, CA – The LMU Lions swept the Santa Clara Broncos Saturday afternoon in both match ups extending the Lions win streak to five in a row.
Game 1
The Lions and Broncos both struggled to get on the scoreboard in the first three innings, with strong pitching and solid defense keeping the game runless.
Amanda Ta'amu started the action with a single to center field, securing herself a hit. Shortly after, Amanda Treach entered the game as a pinch runner, replacing Ta'amu on the bases. Shortly after,
Morgan DeBord was hit by a pitch advancing her to first base.
The score was still 0-0 until
Val Pero stepped to the plate. She connected with a powerful swing, sending the ball over the left field fence for a home run. Pero gained three RBI by sending herself and two baserunners back to home plate. The Lions would now lead, 3-0. Alongside a stellar Lions defense, Perez effectively shut down the Broncos' offense, limiting them to just one hit throughout the game. In the end, the Lions emerged victorious with a final score of 3-0, securing a well-deserved win.
Perez finished with nine strikeouts and an ERA of 1.77.
Izzy Jamgotchian led with nine putouts followed by
Jasmine Sofowora with six.
Game 2
LMU got on the board first when Jamgotchian hit a powerful double to left field, driving
Elisa Rosado across home plate and giving LMU an early 1-0 lead. The following three innings saw a halt, with both teams failing to add any more runs to the scoreboard.
A pitching change was made when
Savannah Hooks came into the game for
Lindsay O'Dell.
At the top of the fifth inning, the Broncos finally got on the board when they singled to left field and gained two runs. Santa Clara now led LMU by one, 2-1.
The Lions quickly answered when Jamgotchian gained another two RBI when she doubled to left field again putting the Lions back on top, 4-1. LMU then made another pitching change, replacing Hooks with Perez to maintain their momentum.
In the seventh inning, the Lions earned another run when Poole singled to center field sending Sofowora back home. The Lions would win the game, 4-2.
Pero led with two assists while
Sydney Poole, Jamgotchian and Sofowora all led with two hits.
Game three of this series will take place tomorrow, Apr. 30, at 12:00 PM.
