Lions Win Doubleheader Against Gaels

LOS ANGELES – The Lions defeated the Saint Mary's Gaels in both games of Saturday's doubleheader, 7-0 & 5-1.

Game 1

The Lions were first to get on the board when a foul out to right field advanced Sydney Poole back to the home plate. In the second inning, Jasmine Sofowora hit a powerful home run towards the left field. Immediately after, Gabby Villa stepped up to the plate and hit her very first home run of the season. The Lions now led the Gaels by three, 3-0.

Despite being up against one of the best teams in the conference, Jenna Perez limited the Gaels to two hits and two walks. Although the Amador managed to get a couple of hits against Perez, no other Gael could hit her pitches.

The Lions would earn two more runs in the fifth inning when Izzy Jamgotchian doubled down the line gaining 2 RBI by sending Amanda Ta'amu and Poole home.

Val Pero earned the last two RBIs by hitting a single to center field; and Kat Hummer and Morgan DeBord's base running helped them cross the plate for the last runs of the game.

The Lions would sweep the Gaels, 7-0.

Jamgotchian led the Lions with three RBI and nine putouts. Poole led with two runs.

Game two

At the bottom of the first inning of the game, LMU's offense wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard. The Gaels committed an error, allowing Poole to advance and score an unearned run. This gave the Lions an early lead and set the tone for the rest of the game

In the third inning, DeBord got hit by a pitch which automatically earn Avery Francis a run and putting the Lions up, 2-0.

The Lions earned another run in the fifth inning when DeBord singled to left field returning Poole back home.

The Gaels tried to make a comeback in the sixth inning when they earned a run, but it would be too late. LMU earned two more runs by Francis and Jasmine Sofowora. LMU's defense held strong and prevented any further scoring from the Gaels in the seventh inning, securing their victory

The Lions would win game two, 5-1.

Lindsay O'Dell faced 22 batters and was the winning pitcher for the game only allowing six hits. Her record is now, 3-2.

Game three is tomorrow against the two teams at Smith Field starting at 11 AM.
