LOS ANGELES – Diego Barrera threw a complete game shutout, Jared Thomas notched a pair of RBI on a first inning double, and the Lions opened up a three-game series with Gonzaga with a 4-0 victory on Friday night at Page Stadium. Â
Â
Barrera came into the night with a 1.62 ERA and a .82 WHIP. Both of those numbers came down in a gem from the senior southpaw. Barrera punched out ten Bulldogs, walked none and allowed only five hits in the performance. Â
Â
His start on the mound was bolstered by some first inning run support. Khadim Diaw walked to open up the game.
Sam Biller followed up with a double past the first baseman, setting up Thomas's double down the right field line to plate a pair. Thomas would come around to score on a sacrifice fly from senior first baseman
Dylan Dennis. Â
Â
The Bulldogs almost crossed the plate, but a perfect relay play from the outfield cut down the runner at home. After a one-out single, the Zags hit a double into right-center. Diaw picked up the ball on the warning track, fired a strike to
Cole Roberts, who then threw a dart to Thomas at the plate for out number two. The following batter lined out to Biller in left to end the inning and the threat. It was the only inning in which the Bulldogs got multiple hits.Â
Â
The Lions extended their lead in the fifth. Shortstop Benny Casillas singled through the right side and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Diaw followed up with a single up the middle and Casillas scored easily from second. Â
Â
Barrera was the second starter to go the distance for the Lions this season after Owen Hackman threw a complete game on Saturday at Portland. Â
