Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

LMU Women’s Water Polo Takes GCC Opener

AZUSA, Calif. – The No. 17 LMU women's water polo team earned a road win in the first Golden Coast Conference game of the season. The Lions never trailed in the 20-12 win over APU.
 
Kelsey Snelgar and Ruth Arino Ruiz scored the opening two goals to push LMU ahead early in the first quarter. The Cougars answered with two goals of their own to tie the score with 5:18 on the clock. The Lions scored the next four goals and never relinquished the lead again as Arino Ruiz, Alexandra Akritidou, Arino Ruiz again, and Marialena Seletopoulou all beat the goalkeeper. LMU took a 7-4 lead into the second quarter as Isabella Barajas scored with less than a minute to play in the opening quarter.
 
Yanah Gerber scored the first goal of the second quarter to double up the score at 8-4. After APU added one back, Seletopoulou scored again. LMU hit double-figures another of Arino Ruiz's game-high six goals to push it to a 10-6 game. Azusa Pacific scored once more before Akritidou ended the half with a goal making it an 11-7 lead at intermission.
 
The two sides traded off scoring in the first three goals of the third as Arino Ruiz added another. Seletopoulou, Mollie Williams, and Mei Vilanova rattled off three unanswered goals. After the Cougars put an end to that run, Akritidou and Arino Ruiz added two back. The Lions carried a 17-11 lead after three full periods.
 
The lead grew to nine as LMU opened the quarter with three straight goals. Anna Tarantino scored less than a minute and a half into fourth, then Sophie Kadifa added one at the 3:14 mark, before Sophia DeMattia pushed it to a 20-11 game with 1:46 remaining before the game ended at 20-12.
 
LMU's goalkeepers shared 10 saves as Madison Davis recorded seven and Talia Herbermann added three.
 
The Lions are set to make their home debuts next weekend with the continuance of conference play on Mar. 10 and 11.
