LMU Water Polo Tops Santa Clara in Rainy Home Opener

LOS ANGELES – Even with a constant downpour, LMU women's water polo moved to 2-0 in the Golden Coast Conference on Friday afternoon with a 16-6 win over Santa Clara.

The Lions opened the game with a Mollie Williams goal to take an early lead. After Santa Clara tied the score, Ruth Arino Ruiz and Marialena Seletopoulou gave LMU the lead that would last for good. The Broncos cut it within one before the Lions closed out the quarter with the final three goals from Yanah Gerber, Ruth Arino Ruiz, and Anna Tarantino.

Santa Clara made it a 6-3 game before Seletopoulou and Gerber scored another goal each in the opening minute and a half of the second to extend the game to 8-3. Following a 30-second timeout midway through the quarter, Sophia DeMattia, Arino Ruiz, and Tara DeBrabander closed out another period with the last three goals over the final four minutes of play.

The two teams traded off goals in the third quarter as Alexandra Akritidou scored in the opening minute. Santa Clara scored with 4:20 on the clock and London Boyd following on the ensuing offensive possession, and the Broncos added one back all within a minute's span.

Julia Erwin and Kelsey Snelgar made it a double-digit lead with less than four to play in the fourth putting the Lions ahead, 15-5. After the Broncos scored their final goal of the game with less than three minutes remaining, Boyd put a punctuation mark on the game with a goal with eight seconds remaining.

Madison Davis earned the win after playing the first half and Talia Herbermann came in for the final 16 minutes and made six saves.

The Lions remain at home this weekend with an 11:00 AM conference game against No. 14 Pacific at Burns Aquatic Center.
