Barrera Shuts Down Highlanders

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Diego Barrera continued to dominate from the left side, going seven innings and striking out eight, and the LMU baseball team defeated UC Riverside 7-1 on Saturday afternoon in Riverside, Calif.

Barrera followed up 6.2 innings of one-run ball last week against No. 15 Oklahoma State with seven innings of one-run ball on Saturday against the Highlanders. He struck out eight, walked only one, and allowed only four hits. The leadoff walk was Barrera's first walk of the season.

The Lions backed up Barrera's sublime start on the mound with early offense.

Sam Biller singled up the middle in the first inning before Jared Thomas lined a double down the left field line for an RBI.

The Lions added three more in the second to increase the advantage.

Trey Becker was hit by a pitch with one out before advancing to third on a perfectly executed hit-and-run from Benny Casillas. Connor Blough would follow up with a sacrifice fly to left to plate Becker from third and double the lead. After Biller and Thomas walked to load the bases, Diego Baqueiro grounded a single through the right side to score two more.

The score would remain that way until the top of the sixth.

Biller singled to lead off the inning, followed shortly thereafter by a Thomas walk. Biller would be erased at second base after a phenomenal sliding catch by the Highlanders left fielder in foul territory, as he was tagged out between second and third. Khadim Diaw followed in the order with two outs, driving a ball to deep center field. Diaw ended up at third with an RBI triple, while Thomas ended up in the dugout with another Lions run. Diaw would score on a Brett Zimmerman single in the following at bat.

The Highlanders would get one back in the bottom half of the sixth but the highlight came off the bat of the sophomore Becker in the top of the ninth. Becker connected on a 2-1 pitch and drove it out to left field for his first collegiate homerun.

Jimmy Galicia came in to work the eighth and ninth innings in relief of Barrera, striking out a pair and allowing one hit.

Barrera now sports a 1.47 ERA through 18.1 innings this season. He has 22 strikeouts to go along with only a single walk.

The Lions are back in action for a doubleheader on Sunday, Mar. 5 in Riverside, Calif.
