LOS ANGELES – In the first of three consecutive days of home games, LMU women's water polo earned a 13-8 win at Burns Aquatic Center over California Baptist University.
Marialena Seletopoulou started the day with the first of her game-high four goals less than a minute into play. After CBU scored twice to take their lone lead of the day, the Lions responded with a tying goal from Seletopoulou and a go-ahead goal from
Alexandra Akritidou. The Lancers tied the game with 41 seconds remaining in the first, before
Mollie Williams responded the other end of the pool to put LMU back agead with 10 seconds remaining.
The lead doubled as Seletopoulou scored the first goal of the second quarter. After CBU cut it back down in half,
Ruth Arino Ruiz,
Kelsey Snelgar, and
Anna Tarantino rattled off three consecutive goals. California Baptist's Jamie Hutton scored twice before the half ended to make it an 8-6 game at intermission.
Only two goals were scored in the entire third quarter, with Snelgar taking advantage of a powerplay in the opening minute and
Isabella Barajas scoring at even-strength with 1:04 showing on the clock.
The Lions built up a five-goal lead three different times in the final quarter. Seletopoulou opened the quarter with a goal that put LMU on top 11-6, Snelgar scored midway through the period to give the Lions a 12-7 lead, and
Mikayla Lopez ended the scoring with 2:07 remaining in the game to bring the game final at 13-8.
Madison Davis made eight saves over the first 29-plus minutes in the cage.
Talia Herbermann recorded one save in the closing stretch of play.
LMU will return to their home pool on Saturday and Sunday for a pair of non-conference games. Both games are scheduled to be played at noon.
