LOS ANGELES – LMU women's water polo picked up their second win of the weekend on Saturday afternoon, topping Westcliff, 17-11.
The Lions fell behind early but scored the next three to take a 3-1 lead as
Marialena Seletopoulou,
Anna Tarantino, and
Yanah Gerber all scored in response. After the Warriors cut their deficit in half,
Kelsey Snelgar pushed it to a 4-2 game with a goal. Westcliff scored the next two goals of the first period to tie the game at 4-4.
Tara DeBrabander and
Ruth Arino Ruiz gave the lead back to LMU to open the second quarter. After Westcliff added one back, the Lions closed the half with five unanswered goals as Arino Ruiz scored twice, and
Isabella Barajas,
Alexandra Akritidou, and Tarantino each scored. Tarantino's goal to beat the buzzer pushed LMU ahead 11-5 at the half.
Westcliff scored the opening four goals of the second half to cut it back to a two-goal game. Akritidou put an end to the run by scoring LMU's only goal of the third quarter.
The Lions pushed the lead back up in the fourth quarter. The two teams traded off the first four goals with DeBrabander and Akritidou each scoring. A trio of freshman closed out the game with goals as
Sophia DeMattia, Katherine Wastilla, and
Lily Larson each scored. The final two goals of the game were the first career goals for Wastilla and Larson.
Madison Davis started the game in the cage and made one save.
Talia Herbermann played the final three quarters and recorded 10 saves.
LMU will return to Burns Aquatics Center Sunday at noon for one final home game. The Lions will host UC San Diego at noon, but much of the day will be focused on the recognition on the senior class.
