LMU Defeat Fresno State in Doubleheader

LOS ANGELES, CA – The Lions defeated the Fresno State Bulldogs in a doubleheader match up Friday afternoon. Both games were close matches winning only by two runs.

In game one the Lions defeated the Bulldogs, 2-1. At the bottom of the second inning Amanda Ta'amu doubled to center field getting the Lions on first base.

Avery Francis came in as a pinch runner for Ta'amu and gave the Lions their first run of the game after Arianna Jaurequi grounded out to second base. Lions led the Bulldogs by one.

In the third inning, Jenna Perez's pitching left Fresno State with zero hits and zero runs quickly making it the Lions turns at bat. At the bottom of the inning, Izzy Jamgotchian gained a RBI when she singled to the right side sending Gabby Villa home and giving the Lions another run.

The Lions and Bulldogs both had zero runs, hits, errors and LOB in the fourth inning. The next run of the game came from the Bulldogs in the fifth inning, but that one run wouldn't be enough to beat the Lions.

Perez pitched all seven innings gaining 11 strikeouts and throwing 105 pitches. Val Pero led both teams with 10 putouts. The Lions also finished with a fielding percentage of .931.

The second game of the day started with both teams coming out hot. Fresno State scored three runs in the first inning making it a challenge for LMU from the beginning. LMU would answer back when Ta'amu hit a home run sending it to left center and gaining two RBIs. The score at the end of the first inning would be, 3-2, which was already more runs than the final of the previous game.

Jessica Hubbard came in to relieve Lindsay O'Dell to hopefully contain the Bulldogs offense but would quickly be replaced by Savannah Hooks after two batters walked.

Hooks would immediately strike out two Bulldogs.

After Fresno State's third out it would be LMU's chance to try and gain the lead. At the bottom of the second Lilliana Thomas doubled to center field reaching first base. After a few balls and fouls Villa would single through the left side sending it far enough for Thomas to run back home and give the Lions one more run.

The score would be all tied at, 3-3, going into the third inning.

The last run of the game would come from Villa singling to center field and gaining an RBI by sending Jasmine Sofowora back to the home plate. The Lions would win, 4-3.

Both Villa and Morgan DeBord led the team with two hits.

Hooks remained in the game for the final innings pitching 81 times with 58 out them being strikes.

The Lions had a total of 123 strikeouts compared to the Bulldogs 112.

The Lions and Bulldogs will play again tomorrow, March 18, at Smith Field starting at 10:00 AM.
