LOS ANGELES – LMU women's water polo moved to 2-0 in the Golden Coast Conference on Saturday with a home win over Pacific. The Lions beat the Tigers, 14-10, for LMU's first win over UOP at Burns Aquatic Center since 2014.
LMU fell behind 1-0 on the opening possession, but that was the only deficit the Lions would face all day.
Yanah Gerber and
Mollie Williams put the Lions ahead 2-1 with back-to-back goals with 5:52 to play. Pacific tied the score with 3:22 on the clock with a powerplay goal to take it to 2-2.
Marialena Seletopoulou opened the second quarter with a goal and Gerber followed to push LMU ahead, 4-2. Pacific cut their deficit in half with a goal before
Ruth Arino Ruiz and
Kelsey Snelgar increased the LMU lead to 6-3 halfway through the second quarter. The Tigers added one back, but the Lions were quick to respond as Williams and
Isabella Barajas added goals to make it an 8-4 lead. Each team scored in the final minute before halftime as
Alexandra Akritidou accounted for LMU's seventh goal of the quarter with 19 seconds left to give the Lions a 9-5 halftime lead.
The two sides mostly traded off scoring in the third quarter. Pacific scored first, then Snelgar for LMU, then another Tigers goal. Seletopoulou and Snelgar went back-to-back before Pacific closed out the period in the closing seconds to make it a 12-8 game.
Ruth Arino Ruiz scored to make it a five-goal lead to open the fourth quarter. In an attempt to come-back, Pacific pulled their goalkeeper and went 7-on-6 resulting in a pair of goals. The tactic big them as Seletopoulou scored on the open goal with a full-length shot.
The Lions were led in the cage by
Madison Davis' 12 saves.
Burns Aquatic Center will continue to be busy in March as the Lions host the LMU Invitational next Saturday with games against UCLA and Princeton.
