LA JOLLA, Calif. – The LMU women's water polo team closed out the UCSD Triton Invitational with a 12-5 win over Concordia on Sunday morning.
The Lions struck first as
Marialena Seletopoulou scored less than two minutes into the game. After Concordia tied the score,
Anna Tarantino gave the lead back to LMU. The back-and-forth action continued as
Sophie Kadifa put the Lions on top with less than a minute to play and then the Golden Eagles answered with a goal on their final possession of the opening quarter
Kadifa,
Mollie Williams, and
Ruth Arino Ruiz scored three consecutive goals to open the second quarter. Concordia answered with the next two goals to pull back within one before
Isabella Barajas and
Mei Vilanova scored the final two goals of the half to bring the score to 8-5.
The Golden Eagles scored first to begin the second half before Williams, Seletopoulou, and Arino Ruiz stretched the lead to 11-6.
Alexandra Akritidou scored the last two goals of the period to make it a 13-7 game entering the final quarter.
Each team scored twice in the fourth quarter to maintain the six-goal difference. Seletopoulou and Williams each scored their third goals of the day in the final quarter.
The Lions will head to Long Beach State next weekend for a Saturday rematch against one of Friday's opponents.
