Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

Lions Place Third In Bracket D, Await Opponent from Bracket A

LA JOLLA, Calif. – LMU women's water polo lost the opening two games of the UCSD Triton Invitational on Friday in Bracket play and await Saturday's opponent.
 
GAME 1: #7 Long Beach State 16 - #22 LMU 7
 
Long Beach State opened the game with the first five goals before Marialena Seletopoulou put the Lions on the board in the final minute of the first. LBSU took a 6-1 lead after one period.
 
The Beach added to the lead in the second before Seletopoulou scored with a second on the clock for her second of the day to make it a 9-2 game at the half.
 
The third quarter was the most prolific offensive quarter for the Lions with LMU scoring five goals during that period. Mollie Williams and Seletopoulou each scored a pair and Yanah Gerber scored one to bring the game within five.
 
LMU would not add any more and dropped the first game of the tournament.
 
GAME 2: #9 UC Irvine 12, #22 LMU 5
 
Mollie Williams opened the game with a goal to give the Lions the lead midway through the first period. The Anteaters tied it up and then Kelsey Snelgar scored with under two to play to push the Lions back on top. UCI closed out the period with the last two to hold a 3-2 lead.
 
UC Irvine scored the first goal of the second, but Ruth Arino Ruiz was quick to respond less than a minute later for the only two goals of the period.
 
After the Anteaters built up a 6-3 lead, Snelgar scored a powerplay less than two minutes into the new half. The 'Eaters responded with the next two before Marialena Seletopoulou added one back in the final minute to make it an 8-5 game heading into the fourth.
 
UCI built on their lead and closed out the game with all four goals of the fourth.
 
NEXT UP:
 
LMU will play either #16 UC Santa Barbara or Concordia or Saturday at 1:00 PM. Those two teams will open the day with a 9:00 game.
