PALM SPRINGS, CA – The Lions finished the last day of the Mary Nutter Classic with two wins against Portland State and UC San Diego.
In game one the Lions got on the board first. While
Sydney Poole and
Morgan DeBord had the bases covered,
Izzy Jamgotchian reached on an error due to the Tritons advancing her to second and sending DeBord and Poole back to home plate.
In the second inning the Lions and Vikings both earned a run, but the Lions still led, 3-1. At the top of the third,
Gabby Villa doubled to right center sending
Jasmine Sofowora giving the Lions another run.
Both teams had something to prove in the fourth inning. At the top,
Taylor Fitch hit a home run gaining two RBI. Quickly after Jamgotchian homered to center field giving the Lions another run.
At the bottom of the inning, the Vikings hit a home run also earning two RBI. Portland State started to creep up on LMU after scoring two more runs in the fifth inning now only trailing by two, 7-5.
The game would end with a single to right field by Jamgotchian sending DeBord back home and giving the Lions the early win, 8-5.
Amanda Ta'amu led both teams in putouts with eight.
In the second game the Lions defeated the Tritons by nine, 11-2.
In the first innings LMU scored the first three runs of the game thanks to Fitch doubling down the infield line. Right afterwards, Jamgotchian grounded out to give Fitch run. The Tritons scored a run at the bottom of the inning, but the Lions still led, 4-1.
LMU gained another three runs in the second inning, while
Jenna Perez pitched a no hitter.
At the bottom of the third UCSD gained one more run, but it wouldn't change the outcome of the game. While both teams went run less in the fourth, the Lions would score four more runs in the fifth and win the game.
Val Pero led game two with eight putouts as well.
The Lions next game is Mar. 10 against the Baylor Bears and the Long Beach State Beach.
