PALM SPRINGS, CA – The Lions finished day one of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic 1-1 Friday evening.
 
In game one the Lions took on the Utah Utes. In the first inning the Utes scored a run leading the Lions for the next two innings. 
 
At the bottom of the fourth Izzy Jamgotchian doubled to center sending Kat Hummer home. Madalie Gomez came in as a pinch runner for Jamgotchian right after. Jasmine Sofowora was at bat next and hit a home run sending herself and Gomez back to come plate leading the Utes by one, 3-2. 
 
The lead didn't last long for LMU though. A couple of Lion errors put two Utes on the bases and after a couple of wild pitches, Utah regained the lead. The next play the Utes doubled to left center and gained another run.
 
The last point for the Utes came in the sixth inning and the Utah Utes would win the game, 6-3. The Utes finished with 10 hits and one error compared to the Lions seven hits and five errors.
 
In the nightcap the Lions defeated the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats, 5-3.
 
In the first inning Morgan DeBord tripled to right center and scored on a throwing error by the Wildcats. Two batters later, Jamgotchian singled up the middle advancing to second giving Taylor Fitch the second run of the game. At the top of the second, Bethune-Cookman scored their first two runs of the game and tied with the Lions, 2-2. 
 
The score would tie up again in the fifth inning, 3-3.
 
At the bottom of the seventh inning, the Wildcats and Lions were still tied until Amanda Ta'amu homered to left field gaining two runs for the Lions. LMU would win, 5-3.
 
The Lions next game will be, Feb. 25, against the No. 2 Oklahoma Sooners.
