Lions Defeat Mustangs

LOS ANGELES – The LMU Lions took down the Master's Mustangs Sunday afternoon, 58-46. This snapped a two-game losing streak for the Lions.

The game unfolded as a tale of two halves,

"A win is a win," said coach Aarika Hughes. "The maturation and growth of our team today was finding a way to win a very ugly one."

Nicole Rodriguez led the show with 14 points on 5-of-12 shooting with two assists and one steal. During the momentum shift in the third, she knocked down back-to-back threes that widened the deficit.

Hughes praised Rodriguez, saying, "I think the second she [Nicole Rodriguez] is confident, she's a threat from anywhere out on the floor."

Cynthia Ezeja also had a solid performance, finishing with 13 points on 6-11 shooting, seven rebounds, and three blocks.

Amaya Oliver also led the Lions with 16 rebounds and two assists.

The Lions started the game by scoring first. Throughout the entire first quarter, the competition remained tight, with the deficit never exceeding three points.

The quarter concluded with a significant block from Ezeja, but the Lions found themselves trailing 10-9 as they entered the second quarter.

At the 5:09 mark, Master's hit a three-pointer, extending their lead to 20-15, the largest margin in the first half. A jumper by Alexis Mark brought the Lions to 20 points, tying the game with Master's.

However, the Mustangs increased their lead with a 5-0 run, and with 1:30 remaining, they widened the gap. The quarter's highlight came with a buzzer-beater three from Da'Ja Hamilton, bringing the Lions within two at 25-23 as they headed into halftime.

The third quarter marked a noticeable shift. The score was tied twice before the Lions went on on a 9-0 run, securing their first lead since the opening quarter at 43-34.

The Lions stretched their lead to 16 points early in the fourth quarter, scoring seven consecutive points. By the time there were 3:51 left in the game, LMU had achieved their largest lead of 17 points. Ultimately, the Lions secured the victory with a final score of 58-46.

The Lions next game is Sunday, Dec. 17, against the Santa Barbara Gauchos in Santa Barbara at 4 PM.
