No.5 Mountaineers Pose Final Test for Lions Before College Cup

LOS ANGELES – The LMU men's soccer team will face No. 5 West Virginia on the road in Morgantown, W. Va. Saturday's match will begin at 11:00 a.m. (PT) and will be broadcast on ESPN+.

The Lions and Mountaineers last met in 2005 in a 1-1 draw that lasted two overtime periods.

Tyger Smalls has taken his game to a new level in the postseason, recording three goals and an assist in three matches. The junior forward notched an 89th minute goal and 90th minute goal against UC Irvine in the first round to send the Lions to a rematch with UCLA. He scored the lone goal in the win over the Bruins and played a spectacular ball to Ryan Kingsford to provide the winner over JMU in the third round.

Massimo Oedekoven Pomponi has also taken his game to new heights between the posts. The senior goalkeeper has only allowed one goal from open play this postseason and has notched a pair of clean sheets in the last two rounds. Pomponi has moved up to ninth in the country in save percentage and 12th in total saves.

The Lions have already made school history by advancing to the quarterfinals for the first time, with a win over the Mountaineers extending their historic run. The Lions would advance to the College Cup in Louisville, Kent. with a victory.

The Mountaineers have been creating history of their own this season.

They go into Saturday's quarterfinal with the most wins in a single season in school history. WVU is also one win away from an unbeaten home record for the 2023 season, something the Lions are sure to be aware of.

While the Mountaineers have been great at home, the Lions have showcased road fortitude all season. The Lions have only fallen once on the road in 2023 and have beaten three NCAA Tournament teams on the road, including a 2-0 defeat of still-alive Oregon State in Corvallis, Ore. on Sept. 24.

Tower Pizza will be hosting a watch party for Los Angeles locals to take in the match. The LMU marketing team will be handing out door prizes and goodies to entice fans to create a fun environment to cheer on the Lions. Tower Pizza is located at 8351 Lincoln Blvd, a stone's throw from the LMU campus.
