Game Recap: Men's Water Polo |

Lions Score Final Four Goals of Regulation, Win in Overtime

LOS ANGELES – No. 12 LMU men's water polo trailed by five goals in the final quarter before completing a historic comeback to knock off No. 11 UC San Diego in overtime, 13-12.
 
The Tritons scored the game's first goal on their opening possession. After Richie Rimlinger tied the score on LMU's first possession of the game, UCSD rattled off the next three goals to take a 4-1 lead. The Lions closed the quarter strong as Denzel Tate scored with 1:04 on the clock and Tommaso Baldineti cut it to a 4-3 game with 23 seconds showing.
 
UC San Diego scored the first three goals of the second quarter to build their lead back up to four goals and take a 7-3 lead into halftime.
 
Jonny Rimlinger and Tyler Harvey scored a goal apiece in the third quarter to cut the deficit in half at 7-5 with 3:31 to play. The Tritons closed the half with three additional goals to double up the Lions at 10-5 entering the final eight minutes of regulation.
 
Less than two minutes into the fourth quarter, Abel Romero Corbalan and Jonny Rimlinger beat the goalkeeper to bring the score to 10-7. UC San Diego got one back before Baldineti answered for the Lions. The Tritons scored their final goal of the game with 3:02 remaining in the fourth before LMU shut them down for the remainder of the game. Jonny Rimlinger found the back of the cage with 2:09 remaining to bring the Lions back within three. Baldinetti scored back-to-back goals with 1:49 and 1:02 showing on the clock to bring the Lions within one entering the final minute of play. With eight ticks remaining, Richie Rinlinger scored the equalizing goal to force overtime. The Lions outscored UC San Diego, 7-2, in the fourth quarter.
 
Only one goal was socred in the two extra periods. Jonny Rimlinger scored the game-winner with 39 seconds left of the first overtime for his fourth goal of the game.
 
Stelios Dalmaras recorded eight saves in his 38 minutes in the cage.
 
The Lions remain at Burns Aquatic Center for the WCC home opener against Air Force on Friday night at 6:00 p.m.
