Lions Fall in WCC Opener

MALIBU, Calif. – In the first-ever West Coast Conference Matchup in the history of the PCH Cup rivalry, No. 5 Pepperdine separated themselves in the second half over No. 11 LMU to win, 12-5.

Pepperdine jumped ahead 2-0 before Abel Romero Corbalan put the Lions on the board at the 5:47 mark of the first. After the Waves rebuilt their two-goal advantage, it was Max Walsworth who cut the deficit in half for the Lions with just under three minutes to play in the period. Pepperdine took a 4-2 lead into the quarter break.

Less than 40 seconds into the second, the Waves scored their only goal of the quarter to take a 5-2 lead. Tommaso Baldineti converted a powerplay goal with 1:02 on the clock and Richie Rimlinger added a 6-on-5 of his own with 16 seconds showing to bring it to a 5-4 game at intermission.

The Waves answered in the third quarter with all three goals of the period to double up the Lions, 8-4, ahead of the final eight-minute session.

Corbalan Romero scored the lone goal for the Lions in the fourth quarter, allowing Pepperdine to extend their lead to 12-5.

Stelios Dalmaras made 15 saves in the game and played the first 30:31. Finn Friedland came in over the final 1:29 of the game.

The Lions return home for the first time in nine games next Saturday with the Oct. 21 game against UC San Diego. The Lions beat the Tritons earlier this season in La Jolla. The game is scheduled for 12:00, with the annual alumni game to immediately follow.
