Lions Defeat Santa Clara Broncos with 3-1 Win

LOS ANGELES – In a thrilling WCC matchup, the Lions defeated the Santa Clara Broncos, 3-1, advancing their record to 7-1.
 
The opening set saw a back-and-forth exchange of points until the Lions jumped ahead, scoring six in a row to lead the Broncos 12-6. Mid-set, the Lions, led by Kari Geissberger's two kills and an Isabella Bareford service ace, extended their lead. Amethyst Harper's kill pushed the lead to 21-11. Michelle Shaffer sealed the set with a kill, securing a 25-19 win for LMU.
 
In the second set, the Broncos took an early lead of 14-6, but the Lions fought back with a sequence of four points, trailing by only three. LMU later went on a seven-point spree, taking the lead 22-21. Despite both teams exceeding 25 points, Santa Clara claimed the set 28-26.
 
The Lions carried momentum into the third set, going on a three-point spree to lead by two. The score remained close, with the deficit being no more than three points, until a kill by Jacquelyn Moore put the Lions up, 14-10. LMU approached the winning threshold after a Shaffer kill, and a Bronco's error brought them within five points. Despite Santa Clara's brief two-point flurries, LMU sealed the deal with a crucial 5-0 run. The set concluded with a Geissberger kill, securing a 25-17 set win for the Lions.
 
Set four saw the Lions dominate with an early 9-5 lead. A few plays later, they went on a five-point and four-point run, putting them up by 13, 22-9. Emmelyn Walters' kill ended the set 25-12, securing a 3-1 match win for LMU.
 
Harper led with 20 kills, 38 attacks, and 22.5 points, along with 3.0 blocks. Bareford impressed with 30 assists, while Geissberger contributed 16 kills and a hitting percentage of .538. With this victory, the Lions are second in the WCC and set to face the No.1 team, Pepperdine Waves, on October 19 at 7 PM in Gersten Pavilion.
