Lions Defeat Gaels by Two

MORAGA, CA – The LMU women's basketball team won in an intense match against the Saint Mary's Gaels Thursday night, 66-64.
 
The Lions were on fire the first quarter. LMU led by five before Ariel Johnson knocked down a three pointer that spark a 9-0 for the Lions making it 15-11. The Gaels did make a comeback towards the end of the quarter resulting in a, 15-15, first quarter score.
 
The aggressiveness continued to show in the second quarter with LMU scoring eight points in the paint and playing excellent defense. Saint Mary's had zero second chance baskets in the second quarter. Going into the locker room the Lions were up, 33-29.
 
In the first half, the Lions were 100% from the line shooting 7-7. 
 
In the third quarter the Gaels came out the gate with a three-pointer coming within a point of the Lions. With 6:58 on the clock, Saint Mary's hit a two tying the game, 36-36. The score would tie four times in the third quarter.
 
Amaya Oliver got fouled with a little over 3:00 to go and completed the three-point play putting the Lions up by three, 46-43. Oliver returned to the line with one minute left and knocked down two important free-throws. The Lions went into the fourth quarter leading the Gaels, 50-45.
 
The Gaels were trying to make a comeback in the fourth quarter. At the two-minute mark the Gaels knocked down a three pointer that tied the game, 62-62. Thanks to great defense and crucial free throws the Lions were able to hold onto the lead and win the game, 66-64.
 
Cassandra Gordon topped her previous career high against San Francisco scoring 19 points against the Gaels. LMU had three players score in double digits. 
 
Johnson almost finished the game with a double-double scoring 20 points and having nine rebounds. Oliver added 12 points and six rebounds to the stat line as well.
 
The Lions next game is Saturday, Jan. 7, against the Pacific Tigers in Stockton, CA.
