Home Crowd Lifts Lions to Fourth Straight Win

LOS ANGELES – In front of over 2,200 people, LMU men's basketball earned an 84-70 win to move to 6-3 in conference play. The Lions led wire-to-wire to win the program's fourth game in a row.
 
LMU opened the game with a Rick Issanza dunk and went ahead 5-0 on a three from Keli Leaupepe.
 
Back-to-back triples from Justin Ahrens pushed LMU ahead 11-3 less than five minutes into the game.
 
Chance Stephens knocked down three threes over the next 3:36 for nine first half points.
 
An 8-0 run pushed the lead to double digits as Jalin Anderson and Shelton sandwiched a Michael Graham dunk with a pair of threes.
 
The first half lead grew to as high as 14 with a duck by Issanza at the 5:29 mark.
 
LMU took a 48-40 lead into intermission after hitting nine first half threes at a 60 percent clip.
 
After Pepperdine scored the first five after the break, LMU responded with a 5-0 run of their own. Shelton scored his first three of his 16 second half points to push it back to an eight-point game.
 
Stephens knocked down his fourth three of the game and Jalin Anderson finished on the fast break push it back at double-digits with 12:38 remaining.
 
Lamaj Lewis knocked down a three midway through the period, then later had an impactful breakaway block that helped bring the crowd to their feet. The Lions finished with six blocked shots.
 
Leaupepe also chased down a black which led to another Ahrens made three. Ahrens added a pair of threes down the stretch to match his season-high with 18 points.
 
Shelton brought it home with the last five LMU points to finish with 26, his fourth consecutive 20-plus point effort.
 
The Lions grabbed 10 offensive rebounds, which led to outscoring the waves 20-2 in second chance points.
 
Following the home stand, LMU will travel to Provo, Utah for the final time against BYU with the Cougars as members of the WCC to face the Cougars. The weekend will end against the Toreros in San Diego on Saturday evening.
