Box Score 2 LONG BEACH, Calif. – First year head coach Ikaika Aki earned his first career wins on Saturday as LMU women's water polo defeated both California Baptist University and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.
Game 1: #24 LMU 12, (RV) CBU 8
Ruth Arino Ruiz made her season debut on Saturday, scoring the only two goals of the first quarter.
The Lions added to the lead as
Marialena Seletopoulou opened the second quarter with a pair of goals. The lead to grew to 5-0 as Arino Ruiz scored once again. After the Lancers scored their first of the day, Arino Ruiz scored her fourth goal of the opening half. With 33 seconds remaining, CBU scored to make it a 6-2 game at halftime.
Each team scored in the opening minute of the third quarter as CBU scored on their first possession and Seletopoulou answered when the Lions went on the attack. LMU's lead extended as
Yanah Gerber, Seletopoulou, and
Kelsey Snelgar scored consecutive goals to push the lead to 10-3. California Baptist stopped the run with a goal at the 18 second mark, but Arino Ruiz increased the lead back to seven with a goal with two seconds showing on the clock.
CBU scored the first four goals of the final quarter before
Tara DeBrabander launched a final shot from the cage in the closing seconds to make the final score, 12-8.
After
Madison Davis' scoreless first quarter, DeBrabander took over for the remainder of the game as LMU's goalkeeper. Davis recorded three saves and DeBrabander made 10 saves for the first time in her career.
Game 2: #24 LMU 14, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 6
Ruth Arino Ruiz scored LMU's first two goals in the first quarter. After CSM tied the score at 2-2 with a goal as time expired.
Yanah Gerber and
Mei Vilanova scored back-to-back goal to open the second, but the Athenas made it a 4-3 game with their only goal of the period.
Kelsey Snelgar and Arino Ruiz scored less than a minute apart to bring the score to 6-3 at the half.
Maddy Gault and
Marialena Seletopoulou opened the second half with goals. The Athenas added one, but Gerber, Seletopoulou, and Vilanova twice ended the quarter with four unanswered.
Sophia DeMattia scored the only goal of the fourth for the Lions to win 14-6.
Madison Davis and
Tara DeBrabander again split time in the cage.
