th-ranked LMU women's water polo was unable to pull off a win over 13
th-ranked San Jose State on Sunday in the final game of the Rainbow Invitational despite a six-goal performance by
Marialena Seletopoulou. The Lions cut a five-goal deficit into just one in the fourth before losing 20-15.
Isabella Barajas tied the game at 1-apiece less than a minute and a half into the action. Seletopoulou scored a pair of powerplay goals to tie the score back up at 2-2 then 3-3 in the first. San Jose State took a 5-3 lead before
Kelsey Snelgar cut the deficit in half with a converted penalty shot. The Spartans took a 7-4 lead into the second quarter.
With the extra player, Snelgar scored on the advantage to cut LMU's deficit to 8-5 with 5:57 on the clock in the second quarter. After a SJSU response,
Sophie Kadifa took advantage of a powerplay situation to bring it back to a three-goal game. With 1:02 remaining before halftime, Barajas capitalized with a 5-meter goal. LMU would add one more before intermission as
Alexandra Akritidou scored with 25 seconds on the clock to bring it to a 12-8 game.
San Jose State opened the second half with a goal before LMU scored three unanswered to pull within two, 13-11. Seletopouloou and
Anna Tarantino scored with a player advantage, which
Yanah Gerber scored at even strength. The Spartans added one more in the final 33 seconds to make it a 14-11 score.
Seletopoulou scored the opening two goals of the fourth quarter with a pair of penalty shots to make it a one-goal game with 6:31 to play. The Spartans responded with two consecutive goals before Barajas scored her third of the day to make it 16-14. The Lions would only score once more, Seletopoulou's sixth goal, before time expired on the comeback bid.
