Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Leaupepe Surpasses 1,000 Career Points, Shelton Scores Career-High in Explosive Win

LOS ANGELES – The offense shined on Saturday night in Gersten Pavilion as LMU men's basketball knocked off San Diego, 98-84. The Lions shot season-bests in all three aspects of the game with 55.2 percent (32-for-58) from the field, 56 percent (14-for-25) from three, and 90.9 percent (20-for-22) from the free throw line.

LMU opened the game in an 8-0 hole before Keli Leaupepe knocked in LMU's first basket, a triple from the corner. The made shot helped Leaupepe surpass 1,000 career points as a Lion, after entering the game with 999 to his name.

The Aussie's milestone basket sparked a 10-0 run by the Lions. Michael Graham followed with a layup then Justin Ahrens buried a three to tie the game at 8-all. LMU took a lead on a layup from Lamaj Lewis that was made possible after both Graham and Leaupepe grabbed offensive rebounds to keep possession with the Lions. Graham scored eight points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Lewis finished with six points and a career-high five assists.

Jalin Anderson hit a pair of threes in the middle of a 12-2 run that turned a two-point advantage to a 27-15 lead with 9:13 on the clock. The lead grew to as large as 13 points as Leaupepe scored four unanswered with just under seven to play.

San Diego cut the score down to as close as two before Cam Shelton hit a three with six seconds on the game clock and the shot clock expiring to send LMU into the locker room ahead, 47-42.

The Toreros tied the game at 47-all coming out of the gates before Anderson hit his fourth three of the game to push the Lions back on top. San Diego took a lead momentarily before Chance Stephens knocked in a three to give the Lions the lead back. Anderson finished 4-for-4 from three and 4-for-5 from the field for his 14 points.

The three by Stephens started a 10-0 run as Shelton scored the next seven points himself en route to his career scoring night.

At 10:16 on the clock, Stephens hit a three on one end of the court, Graham blocked a dunk attempt on the defensive end, and the ball transitioned up to Leaupepe for a fast break three to push LMU up nine with 9:52 to play.

Shelton took over down the stretch, with 17 of his LMU career-high 28 points coming in the second half. Shelton finished a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line in the game to go along with seven assists.

Shelton and Leauepepe knocked down nine combined free throws over the final four minutes. The Lions did not miss a free throw in the second half, going 12-for-12 from the line.

Stephens would hit four threes in the second half as part of his 17-point performance, including one on LMU's final possession.

Leaupepe scored 18 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.

LMU grabbed nine offensive rebounds with three coming from Leaupepe, and two apiece from Graham and Lewis.

Only one game sits on LMU's schedule for next week. A trip to nationally-ranked Gonzaga on Thursday night in Spokane.
