LOS ANGELES – Amanda Perez opened her collegiate scoring account and the LMU women's soccer team remained unbeaten with a 1-1 draw at Sullivan Field against UC San Diego.
LMU won a corner in the 12th minute and almost found their way onto the scoresheet. Gabriella Marchal curled in an inviting ball at the near post that Genevieve Watkins pushed just wide of the post.
Werner had a half chance in the 32nd minute after receiving a gorgeous pass from Makiya Christensen and poked it over the keeper's head before a UCSD defender could kick it away.
Watkins again was the recipient of a corner from Marchal in the 34th minute, this time at the back post. Again, the shot went just wide.
The first half saw a lot of action that never made it into the box score as well, as Madison Thomas, Jessie Halladay and Christensen sent in dangerous balls that nobody could connect with.
Amanda Perez came on with energy in the second half and in the 53rd minute found the back of the net. Kelsey Wong recovered a bouncing ball in the attacking third and sent a cross that found Perez. Perez swung and missed but recovered in time to slot home for the opener.
The Tritons equalized in the 71st minute, but LMU had one more opportunity.
Sarah Murphy was on the end of a Janessa Groves cross and fired a low shot that the Triton goalkeeper made a fantastic stop on.
The Lions are one of 12 unbeaten teams in the country.
West Coast Conference play begins on Saturday, Oct. 1 as the Lions face off against the No. 18 Portland Pilots in Portland, Ore.
