Lions Sneak Past UC Davis

Box Score
DAVIS, Calif. - Mitchell Wilson kept the host Aggies off the scoreboard and the LMU men's soccer team defeated UC Davis 1-0 on Sunday afternoon in Davis, Calif.

The lone goal of the contest came in the second half of the contest when Marco Byers-Mora played an inviting ball to Christian Ortiz. An Aggies defender attempted to play the ball out of bounds but instead played it into the back of the net.

The Lions did a phenomenal job of holding onto possession in both halves. The Lions maintained 54 per cent of possession in the match with nearly 60 per cent in the second half.

The first chance came in the 7th minute when Adam Davie ran onto a ball that was played through by Noel Caliskan. The UC Davis keeper came off his line to make a sliding stop but was awarded a yellow card as his tackle was viewed as a dangerous play.

Caliskan took the ensuing free kick, and it was curled over the bar.

Minutes later, Stefan Reuter forced a turnover after a slip by an Aggies defender and slid a ball through to Caliskan who made a move and fired a shot that was palmed down by the UC Davis keeper.

Dylan Shockey had a terrific opportunity in the 59th minute. After a corner, the ball pinged around the danger area before falling to Shockey who used the outside of his foot to hit a hard, low shot that was once again saved by the Aggie keeper.

The breakthrough came in the 70th minute. Byers-Mora picked the ball up on the left wing and turned around. He took a few dribbles before sliding a perfectly weighted through ball looking for Ortiz. The pass instead found the boot of the Aggies defender who threw up his hands in disgust after the ball ended up in the goal. The Lions wheeled away in celebration.

Wilson collected his second clean sheet of the season after recording one against UNLV last week. Wilson made three saves with two of the spectacular variety. The first came in the 40th minute. The Aggies had a quick counterattack that ended with a through ball to the back post. The UC Davis winger fired a shot that Wilson dove and palmed out of bounds.

The second noteworthy save came in the 64th minute. UC Davis won a free kick in the attacking half, sent in a cross to the back post that was met by the head of an Aggie attacker. The ball shot towards the middle of the goal and Wilson was there to smother it.

The Lions will return to the pitch on Thursday, Sept. 15 to host the Titans of Cal State Fullerton. That match will begin at 7 p.m. (PT) at Sullivan Field in Los Angeles, Calif. and will be available for stream on the WCC Network.
