PROVO, Utah - The Loyola Marymount University Lions (19-32-1, 14-13 WCC) put 17 runs on the board on 21 hits to beat BYU, 12-2. With the win, LMU has officially qualified for the West Coast Conference Championships by virtue of their final record in the WCC standings.
A leadoff double from
Grant Weiss sparked a five-run second inning.
Robbie Ayers would walk and
Dylan Dennis singled to load the bases for LMU.
Ben Grunberg drove home two with a double to put the Lions on the board.
Cole Roberts grounded out to first to bring in a run and make it a 3-0 game. After
Devan Ornelas walked and stole second,
Benny Casillas drove two runs in with a single to right.
Dennis tacked on an RBI in the third inning with his second hit of the day, scoring
Brett Zimmerman who was on second after a double.
BYU scored twice in the bottom half of the third inning with an RBI double and single on back-to-back batters.
Grunberg hit his second RBI double of the day in the second inning, bringing home Dennis and Ayers, and giving LMU an 8-2 lead.
LMU broke it open even more with four runs in the top of the sixth. Following a leadoff double and single, Weiss drove in a run with a double of his out. Zimmerman followed with the third double of the inning, driving home another run. After an Ayers walk,
Dylan Dennis hit into a double play to score a run. Zimmerman advanced and scored on a wild pitch to increase the score to a dozen.
Ornelas led off the seventh with LMU's eighth double of the game and scored on
Diego Baqueiro's RBI single.
BYU plated five in the home half of the eighth with three RBI doubles of their own.
A two-out rally in the top of the ninth inning brought home LMU's final four runs. Following a pair of strikeouts,
Benny Casillas singled setting up the game's only home run. Baqueiro hit a 1-1 pitch over the left-field fence for his team-leading 11
th home run. Back-to-back doubles by Weiss and Zimmerman scored another run, and Ayers put an exclamation mark on the game with an RBI single.
The Lions used four pitchers on the day.
Michael Nunez started and went 2.2 innings.
Quinn Lavelle allowed just one hit over his 3.2 innings of relief to earn the win.
Matt McClure pitched 1.1 innings before Connor Kershaw closed out the final inning and a third.
Lions also had game-highs with seventeen Runs scored, twenty-one Hits, fifteen RBI's, ten Doubles, and thirty-four Total Bases.
With the win, LMU and BYU are set for a rematch this Wednesday in Stockton. The two teams will play in the WCC Championships at the four and five seeds, respectively. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 PM from Banner Island Ballpark.
