LOS ANGELES – The recognition of LMU's senior class highlighted Tuesday night's final home game of the 2022 season. The Loyola Marymount University Lions (18-30-1, 13-11 WCC) scored four runs in the fifth inning, but were unable to erase the 6-0 deficit, to Dixie State, 6-4.
The Trailblazers scored six runs between the third and fifth innings, but only of those runs were earned. The Lions used five pitchers in the game, allowing just one earned run and striking out 10. The fourth LMU reliever,
Michael Nunez pitched four shutout innings, allowing only one hit, and striking out eight himself to put the Trailblazer offense to rest.
Dylan Dennis opened the bottom of the fifth with a leadoff double to right.
Ben Grunberg put down an infield single to set up first and third with nobody out.
Cole Roberts took the first pitch of his at-bat to his shoulder to load the bases. After a strikeout,
Benny Casillas hit a sacrifice fly to score LMU's first run of the day. A passed ball scored Grunberg ahead of
Diego Baqueiro's double down the line scoring Roberts. Following a pitching change,
Grant Weiss knocked in a run with two outs to make it a 6-4 game.
Casillas hit a one out double down the line to bring the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning. To hard hit balls off the bats of Baquiero and Weiss were both caught, ending the game.
The Lions close out the regular season this weekend with three games in Provo against BYU. The series will be played Thursday through Saturday.
