SPOKANE, WA - The Loyola Marymount University Lions (16-27-1, 12-9 WCC) nearly erased an early six-run deficit on Sunday morning before dropping the series to #11 Gonzaga, 6-5.
The Zags put a three-run second inning off the LMU starter Quinn Lavelle. Gonzaga added three more runs in the first inning to take a 6-0 advantage.
LMU chipped away, adding a pair of runs in the sixth inning as Dylan Dennis brought home both Brett Zimmerman and Diego Baqueiro with a two-out RBI single.
Robbie Ayers launched a two-out homer in the top of the sixth inning to bring the score to 6-4. Zimmerman scored his second run of the day on the two-run shot.
in the bottom of the ninth, Cole Roberts beat out an infield single to bring the tying run to the plate. With Roberts moved over to scoring position and the Lions down to their last out, Patrick Stark stepped up with a pinch hit RBI double to bring LMU within one. The Zags opted to walk Baquiero intentionally to create the force out at each base. The decision played to their advantage as Grant Weiss saw his screamer down the third base line snagged and the force applied at third to end the game.
The Lions return home to Page Stadium, May 10, to play UC Irvine. First pitch is set to be thrown at 6:00 PM PST.
